Schmiede

In September, Jos asked me to come along to the Schmiede in Hallein, Austria. The whole event was an extraordinary experience and would be enough for something like 5 Posts here, but as usually, I was waaay too busy to post anything. It always makes me wonder how the hell people manage to have their documentation up 5 minutes after they've done something, but since all the creativity lifestyle guides on The Internet constantly advise me to not compare myself with others, I will stop pondering on the issue now.

Thing is: I played a gig there which was an awful lot of fun. Later people told me it was a bit too loud, but the place had the weirdest acoustics and there was no technician to take care of the sound, blablabla, whatever.
Fortunately, Jos and Anselm agreed to film the whole gig, and even more important, edit the footage afterwards.

Jos made a short clip of one of the 'songs', which I decided to call Borkage:

Anselm edited the whole thing into a 55 minute concert film:

I love how both managed to decently capture the intensity and randomness of what is der Warst.

Uh, Yeah, great stuff guys. Thanks a lot.

Artist House in Brixton

Aaargh! Apart from being filled up with lots and lots of things, my life is incredibly messy at the moment. The only place I can currently call a 'home' is extremely unstable and I am growing tired of it.

Still, there's quite a bit of nice stuff happening that I consider myself happy to be a part of.

For instance, I have a few small and playful sculptures in a very nice show in Brixton at the moment. I failed at writing about it earlier because I didn't have much internet access for the last few weeks. Oh well.

Yeah:

ARTIST HOUSE 2 14TH NOVEMBER 7PM:

Emma Alonze, Rob Bellman, Luke Burton, Rose Gibbs, Aidan O'Sullivan, Alexander Page, Nick Pankhurst, Simon Schafer, Nadia Visram. In a former studio and chapel in Herne Hill a disparate group, some of whom share a studio, will exhibit their work. From 7pm 14th November - 21st November 10am - 5pm.

Bis einer heult.

Finally here's some documentation for my most recent art endeavour. I have a piece in this show 'Batman Elektronik' in Berlin right now. After not having had anything sculptural out for more than a year, this feels a bit like a comeback thing.

Bis einer heult

I'm not sure how and when I got inspired to build something out of inflatable weapons, but once I had them, I instantly felt the old love of materials and working with space again.

Inflatable Weapons

Also, my housemates were delighted when the first batch arrived:

I was surprised by how easy it actually was to glue those things together, but I didn't expect them to be made that badly. Over the course of building the sculpture, more or less every time I inflated it, I had to discover another seam that had cracked. A main offender was the gun I found this bizarre review for:

Instead of being 'pretty cool' as the lady here keeps insisting, this peace of shit had its seams ripping apart in different places at least 6-7 times, and of course it wasn't the only one doing that. Which meant that the sculpture most of the time deflated within minutes after being pumped up regardless of how many patches I'd already put on.

I thought of finding some automated solution for inflating it, but after some fruitless efforts of trying to find a strong enough electric pump, I decided to just do it by hand around every half hour during the private view. So if you happen to be in Berlin some time between now and the 19th of January, you're either gonna have to ask the gallery staff to inflate it for you or even better, do it yourself, to see it in all its glory...

What I learned today:

ALWAYS check your ticket thoroughly before you go to the airport. ESPECIALLY when you are absolutely sure you know which day you are travelling on. Chances are you're gonna waste 2,40 € for the bus and a lot of nerves because you think you missed your plane.

See you tomorrow, London.

I've done a few recordings recently. This one is my favourite so far. The new sound is slowly coming into shape. I can't wait to properly test this stuff live!

This is probably the last thing I will have uploaded to Soundcloud before I'm gonna have to think about a different platform.

I'll be around there pretty much all day and at some point, I'm gonna do a performance of sorts (no idea yet when that's gonna be-will update as soon as I know). The whole thing will take place in the London College of Communication which obviously is around Elephant & Castle.

Please pop by if you feel like it.

Videoprints

A while ago, I scanned the videoprints I've done during live av performances around 2008-2009. I made them with a printer that connects directtly to a composite video input, which was plugged into the output of my video mixer. Since doing live video is more or less my way of painting (not entirely true: I'm currently making the weirdest paintings, but they're not quite ready to be published, yet), these are probably the closest things to static paintings I've made. At least around that time. There are 74 prints, some of which have been collaborations with Eva Becker.

Of course, with 74 prints, not all of them can be of the same quality, still I like most of them a lot.

Here's a few of my favourites in no particular order:

I might upload more of them as soon as I have built a proper project page for them.

I decided to make the Warstware site, documenting my endeavours in circuit bending and machine hackery, official. It's still far from complete and quite messy because I'm slowly getting out of hibernation and projects are piling up, but in my opinion, it's too nice to keep informal for very much longer.

Gazillion Gazebo Aufruf!

Liebe Frankfurter/Offenbacher/Umfeldianer,

Lichter Streetview

An audio-visal live performance/installation loosely based on the overflow of information encountered in an urban environment. Operating a laboratory of Warstware (circuit bent video and sound equipment), Simon Schäfer alias der Warst transforms a customary gazebo into both an immersive environment and a vibrant public sculpture.

Also ist DIY angesagt.

Gazillion Gazebo

Usually, I don't talk publicly about stuff that I just sent out, having no idea how the other side is gonna pick it up. I spent hours and hours today thinking about how to write two sentences. After having actively avoided to think about them for some days. And then it just had to be done. No time, no time.

And here it was. After hours of trying to formulate some farty crap to impress whomever:

The Gazillion Gazebo

I really want to do this. Hopefully it's gonna work...

Post Performance Syndrome...

So there have been a few shows recently. Generally, it feels good to be playing live again. Althought the new setup needs a lot of work until it functions in a way that I want it to. But that's only my stuff and I didn't really expect it to work right away. In any case, it would be way less of a problem if it wasn't for all those fucking annoying PA idiots.

How come so many sound system people are just absolute fucking pussies when it comes to aggressive electronic live music? They bring a completely oversized PA to the venue and play punk bands and breakcore records at deafening volumes, but once I'm on, they shit their pants and turn the levels down to barely audible. Even if I tell them to turn it up about 4 times. Of course then the audience gets annoyed and leaves.

GROW SOME BALLS OR GET A FUCKING LIMITER, ASSHOLES!

It is so incredibly annoying to have just another performance ruined by some sound guy who just doesn't fucking get it.

And don't even get me started about that drugged idiot who thinks he needs to touch my instruments/mixer/whatever.

Yes, I am in a slightly bad mood.

Autumnblips.

I have posted it elsewhere on christmas, but I completely forgot to post it here. Oh well, happy chinese new year then...

Here is the recording of my gig at autumnblips at Panke in Berlin.
A few months after this gig, the memory battery of one of my gameboy cartridges died, thereby erasing two years worth of songs. The idiot that I am also hasn't really taken care of backing up anything since then. Some of those songs I have not even recorded. I will never be able to play, let alone hear them anymore. No one will. They will be fading ghosts in the back of my brain that will haunt me whenever I get reminded of a particular melody or a beat or whatever...

Everytime I touch my Gameboy now, or actually any portable gaming device, it burns LIKE HELL!!!!. I will have to learn to love it again, but right now the disappointment is overpowering.

This was the last real 'official' recording from this particular cart. It feels very important to me, because it kind of sums up what I've been doing in those two years. And it shows me that it's time for a change in program. The Gameboy has dominated my set for quite a while now and in a way, I have started to let myself be limited through that.

So, a few days ago, I built a new Lab, And from here on, I think my sound will be a bit different again. Looking forward to a new challenge.

NYE 2013
